Re: Upgrade problem !!
ok well after a bit of googling I found the answer in William Lam's blog post:
http://www.virtuallyghetto.com/2017/01/esxi-6-5-support-for-apple-mac-pro-61.html
adding the boot option:
prefervmklinux=True
allowed the host to finally boot up .. yay!

ESXi 6.5 Slow vms, High "average response time"
I am running esxi 6.5 with the latest patches and vmware tools 10.1.5
I am having very inconsistent performance issues with both of my hosts. Basically the windows 2016/windows 10 guests are sluggish at times. nothing will load and the os is basically unresponsive when interacting with the gui. The issue seems to be stemming from disk performance but I am not 100% certain that this is the cause, it may be a side affect.
What I have noticed is that some vms show a average response time for the disk of about 2000ms. Yet if i check the performance monitor at a host level the disk and datastores are all showing sub 1ms response time. I am not able to explain the inconsistencies there.
I have a local ssd datastore on each host as well as a rather fast nvme iscsi san that is connected via 100gb mellanox connectx4 cards. I see the issue with both hosts and both datastores. The issue seems to be worse now with the most recent patches and vmware tools drivers. I am using vmxnet3 network cards and paravirtual scsi controllers on all vms.
I have run disk benchmarks on the vms and the resutls vary. I have already seen it where i run a disk benchmark on a guest, get horrible results, vmotion it to the other host, and benchmarks to the san are fine, and then i vmotion the guest back to the original host and the results are fine the second time I run it.
here is an example of a bad test, the reads are terrible:

Re: Free ESXi Backup Solution for Windows
ESXi 6.5 VMs wont start
Hello. Workstation 12.5.4. I have esxi6.5 and vCenter 6.5 all nested. When I go to run a VM within ESXi (even vCenter), it wont power on, hanging at some random point with an error in the events "Running VMware ESX in a virtual machine will result in degraded performance. Do you want to continue?". Obviously no way of answering this (I believe in 6.0 and earlier you could use the C# client but that's not there anymore in 6.5).
It was working for me real nice (I think until the update, or it may have been esxi 6.5). Any ideas?
Thanks
SSL VPN Plus - vCloud Director 8.20 / NSX 6.2.5
Hello
I am working with vCloud director 8.20 and trying to configure SSL VPN-Plus feature as explained in VMware Tenant Portal guide. Tenant portal guide explain multi step configuration
Setup: vCD: 8.20, vSphere: 6.0 U2, NSX: 6.2.5
http://pubs.vmware.com/vcd-820/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vcd_820_tenantportal.pdf
Configure SSL VPN Server Settings
Procedure
1 In the tenant portal, on the SSL VPN-Plus screen, click Server Settings.
2 Select an IPv4 address.
3 (Optional) Type a TCP port number.
This TCP port number is used by the SSL client installation package. By default, the system uses port
443, which is the default port for HTTPS/SSL traffic. Even though port number is required you can set
any TCP port for communications.
Note The SSL VPN client requires the IP address and port configured here to be reachable from your
remote users' client systems. If you change the port number from the default, ensure the IP address and
port combination will be reachable from your intended users' systems.
4 Select an encryption method in the cipher list.
5 Configure the service's syslog logging policy.
Logging is enabled by default. You can change the level of messages to log or disable logging.
6 (Optional) If you want to use a service certificate instead of the system-generated self-signed certificate
that the system uses by default, click CHANGE SERVER CERTIFICATE, make your selection, and click OK.
7 Click Save changes.
ISSUE 1: When I complete Server settings and try to save it. I get message as shown below. Now question is:
As per Information provided in tenant portal guide I should be able to save the setting but I cant. Is this a Normal Behavior?
As part of resolution of shown message, I discard changes (as I don’t have any other option) to move to authentication tab and get below shown message
I created local authserver with default setting
ISSUE 2: When I tried to edit setting of authserver to change password policy I get below error message. Its surprising that I cant edit setting after auth server creation. Is this again a normal behaviour?
Below error can be seen on NSX Edge
ISSUE 3: I left authserver with default setting with no choice and tried creating a new user. I got below error message. So far I am not able to configure SSL VPN- Plus feature using steps given in Tenant portal guide
Just to see if I can create a new user directly from NSX manager but I could not and got below error message
For me it seems a abnormal behaviour as i tried following documentation but i could not configure SSL VPN feature. I hope someone from VMware take a look at the sequence of steps explained in guide and issues i encountered while following it with component version provided above. Anyone encountered these problems?
Workaround I found:
I have one more VSE deployed in one of my Org vDC and for this vDC I didn’t do any other configuration for SSL VPN Plus. First step I did was to create a user and this time I didn’t encounter error. I can see a new local authserver got created and none of the setting for Authserver was found to be enabled
I tried editing auth server setting and I was able to modify setting without any error message
Re: Fusion 8.X updating error
Hi,
Not sure on the error you highlighted if that's the real problem.
But one way to work around update issues like this is to just download the full installer and install that one.
Easiest link for me to share is:
Download VMware Fusion 8.5 or Fusion 8.5 Pro - VMware Products
Even while it says "trial" it is the full download.

NSX Edge Cluster
Hello every one.
Cannot find resolve for my infrastructure.
Idea: Want to provide services vCloud Director.
Have BGP and different ISPs connected to Juniper MX104. Have 2 x Cisco Nexus 9372PX. 2 x Chasis C7000 + RackMounts + Directly connected to Nexus 4x10G per host.
Have 3 vCenters and clusters:Management vCloud, Resources -for Tenant VMs, Edge Cluster - newly prepared for NSX.
Idea - is - follow ref architecture - migrate all Internet connectivity to EDGE cluster. But im stacking how to do.
Because for Spine/Leaf - architect i dont have enought devices. Also Not clear how better to do it.
At all clusters -im allready have NSX. I can configure integration NSX with MX104 - to directly VXLAN to NSX.
If somebody -see same type of architect or have an idea how to do it more nicely - please share it with me. L3/L2 - point- destoyed me .
Thanks !!!!
Re: Cloned Linux VM loses network share
Further to the above, I have now found a Microsoft Hotfix that fixes the problem (I run Windows 7 x64). The explanation was found at Deploying Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 7 templates with vmxnet3 renames the NIC as #2 (1020078) | VMware KB and the Microsoft Hotix was requested at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2550978/-0x0000007b-stop-error-after-you-replace-an-identical-iscsi-network-ada…
I had no problems rebooting my laptop after installing the hotfix and I have not had time to check if it interferes with anything else, but I imaged the drive first
Upgrading ESXi 5.5 (HP custom image)
Hi,
I have a HP Proliant Server running an HP custom image of ESXi 5.5.
We have a VMware Vsphere Essentials Plus license.
I want to upgrade to ESXi 6.6.
Our license does not include vSphere update manager.
I guess the best way to upgrade is doing an interactive update using an ESXi 6.0 ISO.
Do I use a generic ISO or again a HP ISO?
Are there any risks involved?
Re: Upgrading ESXi 5.5 (HP custom image)
Assuming that you are using supported server hardware, you should definitely use the HPE OEM image, which includes required drivers.
I'd also recommend that you run a firmware update using the latest SPP 2016.10 which includes critical updates, e.g. for iLO.

SVGA 3D GPU does not support DirectX 10.0 which is required
Hello,
I had seen a post about this in relation to Fusion back in Nov 2016 with no fix offered up. I am using workstation and planned on upgrading to Pro as I need to run 3/4 VMs..... However, the application I am trying to run/test opens up and then doesn't finishing loading due to DirectX 10.0 not being supported? The program even came with DirectX installer that I ran to ensure the proper DirectX was installed, as well as, ran dxdiag...... Shows DirectX 11, Display is VMWare SVGA 3D and DirectDraw acceleration is enabled, Direct3D acceleration is enabled, and AGP Texture Acceleration is enabled....
Any ideas?
Can't drag widgets in vROps 6.4
Has anyone seen the issue where vROps won't allow you to drag and drop widgets? I'm running vROps 6.4 and logged in as admin.
Re: Domain users permission error on Vcenter 6.5 B
Did you assigned permission to the vCenter Server or just the SSO, remember that you should add permission to vCenter? Anyway, check if the following is related to your problem: http://www.virtuallyghetto.com/2017/03/vsphere-6-5b-prevents-vsphere-web-client-logins-for-users-wo-vc-permissions.html
